In 2006, three outstanding artists were selected as the chosen artists of the Juming Museum annual Call for Application Submissions. Erik Olofsen, one of the chosen artists, shows excellent vision and execution skill on his works.
In 2005, Olofsen received funding for producing “Drives” from the Nederlands Fonds voor de Film. This film was completed right before this exhibition was installed. Olofsen refers the word drive’s double meaning to the implication of this work. One is to drive on the road, and another is the desire of achieving any goals. By using high speed digital camera and setting up the capture interval of every three seconds, Olofsen records drivers in various moving cars. Each three seconds long video work is then edited into a one to two minutes short film by slowing down the motion.
Via his works, Olofsen shows the mechanism between cause and effect, control and being controlled, and how physical surroundings affect and influence on human behaviors. Moreover, his acute observation makes an indelible and graceful impression for all. Exceptionably, while Olofsen expresses his introspection and observation as an observer and artist, Olofsen does not forget to face the certain task with all viewers. As if he is standing by the viewers and pointing together a broader perspective to see the world.
